Eight Handy Spring Cleaning Tricks

Put the spring into cleaning as your transition from winter.

Spring cleaning €”it either sounds super exciting or super overwhelming. A time to brush off the burdens of winter or a time to remember how dirty your appliances are after the holidays (where is that stain from?). Whichever temperament you find yourself in at the end of another season, here are eight helpful and innovative tips to get you started for this year's big clean.
  1. Screen cleaning with €¦coffee filters?
For all the various digital screens in your possession €”TV, computer monitor, laptop, iPad, tablet, etc. €”use a paper coffee filter to remove lint and dust for your viewing pleasure.
  1. Ceiling broom duster
To reach those high-ceilinged corners crowded with unseen cobwebs and dust, secure a microfiber rag over a broom with a large rubber band, and sweep €”upside down!
  1. Salt for cast iron or drains
Clean your cast iron pans with coarse salt and a soft sponge to remove stains and preserve the coating. You can also try speeding up your slow drains by pouring down a mixture of salt and hot water ( ½ cup of salt for every quart of hot water). Repeat as needed!
  1. White vinegar for window tracks
The trenched spaces between windows and sliding doors can get excessively dirty. Dip a Q-tip (probably several) into a cup of white vinegar and wipe directly onto those narrow window tracks. The gunk will lift with the vinegar. Use paper towels for the larger sliding glass door spaces!
  1. Q-tip the keyboard
When's the last time you cleaned this? Disconnect your keyboard and use a Q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol to absorb the build-up between the keys.   You can also clean the ball of your mouse using this method, just make sure it's properly unplugged and deconstructed first.
  1. Dryer sheets in the shower
Take a used dryer sheet out of your dryer, get it slightly wet with a few drops of water, and use as a substitute scrubber on your glass shower walls and doors. Removes the residual soap!
  1. Baking soda to freshen
Keep your towels and linens fresh year-round by placing an opened box of baking soda in the cabinet, and freshen up your living room by sprinkling baking soda on your carpet. Let it sit for a few hours to adequately remove odor and then vacuum it up!
  1. Lemon your cutting board
Get the stains out of your cutting boards with lemon juice! Halve a lemon, squeeze the juice on the stains, and rinse after 20 minutes of action. You'll love the after smell, too. Here's to a stain-free and fresh scented home!
